Miami Airport Transfers: MIA vs FLL
Real timings from MIA and Fort Lauderdale, which airport suits your neighbourhood, and the vehicle-size mistake groups keep making.

Miami has two airports, and the one you fly into changes your ground transport more than most visitors expect. Miami International (MIA) sits about ten miles west of South Beach. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood (FLL) is roughly thirty miles north. On a clear Tuesday morning both are straightforward. On a Friday in season, one of them can cost you an extra hour.
This is what actually determines how long the transfer takes, and how to choose between the options.
MIA to South Beach: the honest timing
The distance is short — the drive is not always. The route crosses the MacArthur or Julia Tuttle causeway, and both are single points of failure: when the causeway backs up, there is no alternative road.
- Off-peak — roughly 20 to 25 minutes.
- Weekday rush, or any Friday afternoon in season — 40 to 60 minutes is normal.
- During a major event — assume worse, and leave earlier than feels sensible.
The mistake is planning the return leg on the same timing as the arrival. Arrivals are usually mid-morning and quiet; departures are often late afternoon, which is exactly when the causeways are worst.
FLL: further, sometimes faster
Fort Lauderdale is about 30 miles from South Beach, typically 45 to 60 minutes, and the route runs on I-95 rather than through the city. It is a smaller, calmer airport with a shorter walk from gate to kerb.
If you are staying in Bal Harbour, Sunny Isles or anywhere in the northern half of the beach, FLL is frequently the better arrival airport even though it looks further on a map. If you are staying in Brickell, Coconut Grove or Key Biscayne, MIA wins clearly.
The options, and what each one is actually for
Ride-hailing
Cheapest and perfectly adequate for one or two people with hand luggage. Both airports have designated pick-up zones that are not always next to the terminal exit, which is the part that surprises people arriving with a family and four suitcases after a transatlantic flight.
Taxi
Available on the rank, no app required. Fine for a short hop; not the option most people want at the end of a long-haul flight with a group.
Private chauffeur
The difference is not the vehicle, it is that someone is tracking the flight. If you land two hours late, the car moves; if you clear immigration in twenty minutes instead of ninety, the car is already there. For a group with luggage, or anyone arriving on an international flight where the arrival time is a guess, this is the thing that removes the friction.
It is also the sensible choice when the drive is not the last leg — an arrival that continues to a yacht, a dinner, or an event with a fixed start.
Vehicle size: the mistake groups make
A common error is booking a sedan for four adults with luggage because four seats sounds sufficient. It is not — luggage capacity, not seat count, is the constraint on an airport run.
- Two people, cabin bags — a sedan is fine.
- Two to four people with checked luggage — a full-size SUV.
- Five or more, or golf clubs, or a week's worth of cases — an extended SUV such as an Escalade ESV, or two vehicles.
Splitting into two smaller cars is often better than squeezing into one large one, and rarely costs much more.
Immigration: build in the buffer
MIA is a major international gateway and passport control times vary widely by hour and by terminal. If you are connecting to something time-sensitive on the same day, treat the published arrival time as the start of a process, not the end of one.
This is the single most useful reason to have a driver rather than an app: the waiting is someone else's problem, and no one is cancelling on you because you took eighty minutes to reach the kerb.
Departures
For an international departure from MIA, plan to leave South Beach three hours before the flight in season, and add to that on a Friday or Sunday. The airport's own security wait is only part of it — the causeway and the rental-car return traffic are the rest.
How we arrange it
Send us your flight numbers and the number of people and bags, and we will tell you what size vehicle the run actually needs — including when a single car is enough and you do not need two.
